What’s in

On the counter

It changes with the day and the season. If you’re after something in particular, like a tomahawk for the weekend, give the shop a ring or send a message first.

  • Sausages

    Homemade, plus Lashford’s

A new homemade flavour every week, such as pork and sweet chilli, cheese and jalapeño, or plum and ginger, alongside plain, Cumberland and tomato. This week’s flavour goes up on Facebook. Lashford’s are made by a Birmingham family firm that has been making sausages since 1889.

The shop

New sign, same blue tiles

Clayton Fern served Alvechurch for 50 years before retiring from this shop in June 2024, and the village was left without a butcher.

That August, Steven Fowler opened the doors again as Village Butchers. He started learning butchery at 16 and had 28 years in the trade when he took on the shop. The traditional cuts and joints are still on the counter, alongside a new homemade sausage every week.

“The people of the village have all been really welcoming, friendly and very enthusiastic to have a butcher’s back in the village.”

Steven Fowler, speaking to The Village, September 2024
